Preflop trainer

Practise the first decision of every hand: raise or fold when everyone before you has folded. Each answer is checked against the ranges of our position chart and scored.

Your score shows here after the first hand.

Everyone folds to you in the cutoff, one seat before the button.

How the trainer works

Each hand deals you two cards and a seat at a six-handed table, with everyone before you folded. Raise or fold. Your answer is checked against the ranges of our position chart: about 10% of hands under the gun and in the hijack, 18% in the cutoff and the small blind, and 31% on the button.

Most of the hands the trainer deals sit near the edge of a range, because those are the decisions where the seat matters. Pocket aces are a raise from every seat and seven-two offsuit is a fold from every seat, so they come up only now and then. The score stays until you leave the page, and nothing is stored.

The ranges are tight on purpose. They are a start for a six-handed cash game when nobody has entered the pot. Facing a raise, play fewer hands. At a nine-handed table, play tighter from the early seats, because more players are still to act behind you.

Questions

What ranges does the preflop trainer use?

The ranges of our position chart for a six-handed table when nobody has entered the pot: about 10% of hands under the gun and in the hijack, about 18% in the cutoff and the small blind, and about 31% on the button.

Why does the trainer deal so many close hands?

Because those are the hands where the seat decides. Pocket aces are a raise from every seat and seven-two offsuit a fold from every seat, so most deals sit near the edge of a range instead.

Should I play the same ranges at a nine-handed table?

From the late seats, yes. From the early seats play tighter, because more players are still to act behind you. The position chart has the nine-handed seats.
